The Shamrock

Our dear puffin wears a Shamrock on his lapel, signifying the heritage between our two founding families ( Ireland and France ) but is also an acknowledgement of our most beloved vessel that carries cargo, livestock, and visiting guests to Lambay. The Shamrock is a forty five foot wooden hulled ferry boat with 180 HP Cummins diesel engine and has been servicing Lambay Island since the 1960’s. Built in 1962 at Tyrrell’s Boat yard of Arklow, a firm with international reputation for innovative design and first class craftsmanship, it is said that the Shamrock was a showcase boat famed for her wooden-hull build preceeding the plans for the famous Asgard II , also built at Tyrells Boatyard, Co.Arklow. Life on Lambay just would’nt be the way it is without the steady hum of the Shamrock making her way across the sea from Rogerstown, Rush to the harbour of Lambay. Skippered by Eoin Grimes from Skerries Tours, the Shamrock was recently brought out to dry dock in Howth Marina to receive some much needed care and attention. Over 60 litres of paint later and alot of elbow greese ! – in May 2020, she was returned to the sea in her signature colouring of green and brown hull once again.

The boat used by the Talbots in the 19th century was named “SHAMROCK” and the Barings had a “SHAMROCK” in 1905 and so a long tradition is continued to this day.

Each time we see her docking we know the good stuff is landing and happy to fill our Sea Cask Room with more delicious whiskey casks!
